Walk From Obesity

Today was Connecticut's Walk From Obesity and I've been looking forward to this since I found out about it a month ago. However, the weather was predicted to be rainy-- with perhaps heavy rains, and thunder storms as well. So we went to bed last night thinking we'd get up this morning, eyeball the sky and make a decision from there.

We really slept in (something we NEVER do) this morning and had only moments to decide whether or not we were going to the walk. It looked cloudy, but wasn't raining so we decided to bring some umbrellas and chance that it wouldn't thunder and down-pour during the event.

We got dressed while the coffee brewed and I made us a quick breakfast for the road -- scrambled egg whites, red grapes, and a little fat-free Greek yogurt. We got out of the house in record time and headed to Walnut Hill Park in New Britain, the gathering place for the walk.

I have never been to this Park before and it is GORGEOUS! It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the man who designed Central Park in New York. He is known as the father of American Landscape Architecture. Anyway, the landscaping at this park is spectacular and I'd like to go back during the summer when there's more in bloom

While signing up we realized that the turn-out for the walk wasn't that great, so we were glad that we made the effort to be there and show support.

Here's some people milling around and listening to the DJ as the start time approached.

Each loop of the walk is one mile so we completed all three and then hung out for the raffle drawing afterwards. By the time we got back to our area, we realized we were starving. I totally lost track of time--- it was 2pm and we hadn't eaten since our breakfast on the fly.

We had to go to Trader Joe's anyway so we picked up some grilled chicken strips and a spinach salad while we were there and, once again, ate on the fly in the van while we ran various errands.

On I-95, I noticed a few trees here and there were starting to turn their gorgeous autumn colors and I snapped the pic above. Soon, I should be able to post some great shots from my walks -- autumn in New England is a riot of color!

Anyway, we had plans to have one of our sons over for dinner tonight so by the time we got home, I had to swing right into cooking. I threw together a delicious supper of turkey, potatoes roasted with garlic and fresh rosemary, and a spinach salad with a fresh dressing that I made from fat-free Greek yogurt.

It was great to actually sit at a table and eat for the first time all day! Also, we don't get to see Andrew much so it was a great topper to a busy day.
We have family visiting from Georgia whom we're seeing tomorrow, so I may not be posting until Monday. I'll be eating in a restaurant for dinner tomorrow and plan to have some restraint about what I eat.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend! And hey, there may be a Walk From Obesity in your area-- so check it out if you're interested!

Be Good to you today!

Walk From Obesity - Please Join me!

All across America, people will be walking to generate awareness of obesity, in particular morbid obesity and childhood obesity. Our walk in CT will take place at Walnut Hill Park in New Britain on Saturday, October 3rd. My DH and I will be there... won't you join us?

Check out this link to get more info and to find a walk in your area:

The walk near me is three weeks away and I'll be using that time to build up my mileage and endurance. Walking hasn't been my primary form of exercise, so I have to prepare. I am hoping that all my friends out in blogging land will find a walk near them and participate!

If you live in CT, look for me there. Just search out the tallest woman you can find and that will be me!

I am REALLY pushing myself to see what sort of result I have at my next monthly progress report! I've been adding more walking and cardio to the weight training. We'll see how it goes!
