Walk From Obesity

Today was Connecticut's Walk From Obesity and I've been looking forward to this since I found out about it a month ago. However, the weather was predicted to be rainy-- with perhaps heavy rains, and thunder storms as well. So we went to bed last night thinking we'd get up this morning, eyeball the sky and make a decision from there.

We really slept in (something we NEVER do) this morning and had only moments to decide whether or not we were going to the walk. It looked cloudy, but wasn't raining so we decided to bring some umbrellas and chance that it wouldn't thunder and down-pour during the event.

We got dressed while the coffee brewed and I made us a quick breakfast for the road -- scrambled egg whites, red grapes, and a little fat-free Greek yogurt. We got out of the house in record time and headed to Walnut Hill Park in New Britain, the gathering place for the walk.

I have never been to this Park before and it is GORGEOUS! It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the man who designed Central Park in New York. He is known as the father of American Landscape Architecture. Anyway, the landscaping at this park is spectacular and I'd like to go back during the summer when there's more in bloom

While signing up we realized that the turn-out for the walk wasn't that great, so we were glad that we made the effort to be there and show support.

Here's some people milling around and listening to the DJ as the start time approached.

Each loop of the walk is one mile so we completed all three and then hung out for the raffle drawing afterwards. By the time we got back to our area, we realized we were starving. I totally lost track of time--- it was 2pm and we hadn't eaten since our breakfast on the fly.

We had to go to Trader Joe's anyway so we picked up some grilled chicken strips and a spinach salad while we were there and, once again, ate on the fly in the van while we ran various errands.

On I-95, I noticed a few trees here and there were starting to turn their gorgeous autumn colors and I snapped the pic above. Soon, I should be able to post some great shots from my walks -- autumn in New England is a riot of color!

Anyway, we had plans to have one of our sons over for dinner tonight so by the time we got home, I had to swing right into cooking. I threw together a delicious supper of turkey, potatoes roasted with garlic and fresh rosemary, and a spinach salad with a fresh dressing that I made from fat-free Greek yogurt.

It was great to actually sit at a table and eat for the first time all day! Also, we don't get to see Andrew much so it was a great topper to a busy day.
We have family visiting from Georgia whom we're seeing tomorrow, so I may not be posting until Monday. I'll be eating in a restaurant for dinner tomorrow and plan to have some restraint about what I eat.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend! And hey, there may be a Walk From Obesity in your area-- so check it out if you're interested!

Be Good to you today!

  6. We don't have a Walk from Obesity in my area - the nearest one being two hours away. It looks like a good time for a great cause though. I am glad you decided to go.

  7. Congrats on doing the walk. I had no idea or maybe I just never noticed that you live in CT! So do I. It was downpouring in SE CT yesterday until around 2:00 p.m. so my run yesterday was on the treadmill. Have a good time with your guests and I have complete confidence that you will make great choices at the restaurant... just do the best you can in the situation you're in!

  8. Congrats on your walk, and thanks also for mentioning Fredrick Law Olmstead -I'm a big fan of his work. Sounds as though you found a way to make it a pleasant experience in spite of the lousy weather!

  9. Hi Lori Ann,

Glad you had a good experience with the walk, not to mention completing it. Your weekly mileage tallies are great - good work. I posted some fall shots from a walk at a local park on Saturday - check them out. Now that I finally learned to use my camera (it only took 2 years) I'm taking pictures of everything - even my dinner cooking! Your photos on your blog have inspired me.
